For some crazy reason, in a moment of pure bravery, we signed all of our family up for the Air Force Marathon 10K which we will run in September of this year. Yes, even Kinslee! We have been running with them for a couple of months and had a practice 5K this past Monday on Memorial Day. Let me say first that during our practice runs, although Braden and Kinslee wouldn't say they "like" running, they always have fun and do great. They had run about 2.5 miles in our practices and we were hoping that adrenaline for the race would get them the last 1/2 mile for Monday.
We were wrong.
Don't let their happy faces here fool you!
This was pre-race. We got at the race early to register, which wouldn't have been necessary. So we had extra time to sit in the hot sun...only about 93 degrees that day! By the time the race started, Kinslee and Braden were miserable. About 1/2 a mile in they both started crying uncontrollably. Matt had Braden and I had Kinslee. (Maddie was completely fine...we let her run ahead of us and she took off!) We definitely got many "What Kind of Parent Are You?" looks from others as we were dragging them along crying. Kinslee fell and scraped her knees three times, which got more sympathy from the passing runners. Very, very frustrating.
Especially when last night we went out for a run and they easily did 3.1 miles without stopping (or crying!).
And to make it even better...there were only 6 kids each in Kinslee and Braden's categories. They got 5th place, which meant they would have gotten an award if we'd have stayed for the ceremony. I'm glad we didn't though because I didn't really want them rewarded for the way they were acting!!
Oh well...we can only hope that the day of the 10K will not be so hot...and that we have lots of good training in the next 3 1/2 months!
PS...Maddie finished 9th out of 27 kids (ages 10-14). She was so excited that she did the run herself and finished that well even though she was on the young side of the group!
